Battle for Our Minds

Does anyone else have a sometimes overactive imagination/mind? Recently when I headed out for a ride through the country I noticed a truck behind me. At first I didn’t think anything about it, but as I started making impromptu turns down other side roads,  I noticed it turned every time I did. Sometimes it would stay quite a ways back from me, other times it was only a car length behind.

My overactive imagination side envisioned several negative reasons he/she might be following.  Therefore, once I reached a populated area where I could safely pull over to a location that didn’t allow for someone to pull right behind me I did exactly that. After a few minutes I then pulled back out and continued my journey.  At some point I was thinking about what had occurred and the reasonable side of me then wondered if maybe it was just something that was really nothing, or, if God sent that vehicle to follow as a form of protection of some kind. I’ll never know the answer to that but it definitely made me think! Why do we sometimes immediately assume the worst?

I do know we have to be cautious in this world, much more so than just 10 years ago, especially women when we’re alone. It’s sad the state our world is in but it shouldn’t come as a surprise,  it’s simply the Bible playing out before our eyes.

The positive side of that is that there will come a day when we’re with Jesus and all the evil and negative thoughts will be gone!

As the hymn by Jim Hill with the same title says;

“What a day that will be
When my Jesus I shall see
And I look upon his face
The one who saved me by his grace
When he takes me by the hand
And leads me through the Promised Land
What a day, glorious day that will be”

When that day comes there will be no more battle for our mind, if we are a born again Christian, we will be with Jesus. Battle over.

Until that day comes, the battles rage on though. We have to decide daily, sometimes even hourly, what voices to listen to and follow. We can choose to remember His promises and live with positive thoughts, or we can believe the enemy and focus on the negative. He has given us the freedom to choose,  and the choice is ours to make.

I had multiple conversations today and throughout just this week,  with people who were/ are struggling with some things and trying to make the right decisions. Some of these concerned decisions that could potentially cause family/friend conflict.  In the end all decisions need to be made based on how Jesus would have us respond/react. As was discussed in at least 2 of those conversations, the decisions really aren’t about “taking sides” because there’s really no side worth taking other than Jesus ‘ side. Ultimately He is the only one we need to be concerned with pleasing. As long as the decisions are right in the eyes of Jesus, that’s what matters.

Pray, listen for His answer,  and then decide. If the decision just doesn’t “feel right ” that may very well be the Holy Spirit speaking to you, don’t ignore it. I’m speaking from experience on this. I can’t tell you how many times in the past I’ve had that uneasy feeling and ignored it only to later realize I should have listened better to that still small voice.

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray without ceasing.

It’s just that simple really, we often choose instead to make it complicated. So who will win the battle of our mind today? The choice is yours,  and mine. Choose wisely, and most importantly, choose prayerfully.
